Electrocardiograph or EKG technicians perform EKG tests on patients under the supervision of a physician. EKGs trace electrical impulses transmitted by a heart, which is monitored through a machine. Readings provided by this machine allows an EKG technicians and physicians to diagnose various heart conditions. Typically an Associate's degree in this field is sufficient to obtain licensure for practice as an EKG technician, although some choose to go for higher levels of education. Coursework in this field would include basic human anatomy, physiology, training in clinical procedures, lab procedures, operation and maintenance of EKG equipment, and more in-depth studies of the human heart and its diseases.
